Cloudflare error 522: connection timed out

Updated 11 October 2026

Short answer

Error 522 means Cloudflare tried to connect to your server and got no reply at all before it gave up. Unlike a 521 (refused), here nothing answered. The server is offline, so overloaded it can't accept new connections, or a firewall is quietly dropping Cloudflare's traffic. It's also common when the IP address in your Cloudflare DNS is wrong or old.

What's the problem

Visitors see "Error 522: Connection timed out" on a Cloudflare page, with "Host" marked as the error.

Why it happens

  • The server is overloaded, out of CPU, memory or connections.
  • The server is offline, or the hosting account is suspended.
  • A firewall drops Cloudflare's requests without replying.
  • The DNS record in Cloudflare points to the wrong IP address, for example after moving hosts.
  • Keepalive is disabled on the server.

How to fix it

  1. Check the IP address in your Cloudflare DNS records matches your current server.
  2. Check the server is up and has free CPU and memory.
  3. Allow Cloudflare's IP ranges in every firewall in front of your server, including your host's.
  4. If traffic spiked, reduce load with caching, or upgrade the server.
  5. Contact your host with the time and Ray ID if you can't find it.

What Preventionlabs checks

One click runs the full report on your domain. For this problem it shows whether your site loads, how fast, and where its redirects go; uptime checked every 5 minutes, with an email when the site goes down and when it is back. With Cloudflare connected, it also shows which pages returned server errors (5xx) to visitors, and when; your SSL mode and the other settings that commonly cause this; which requests the firewall blocked, by Cloudflare's own rule names; recent deploys and account changes, with their times; DNS changes in the last 7 days.
