Check DigitalOcean's status page for incidents in your region first. If DigitalOcean is fine, the problem is your Droplet (your server): it's out of memory or disk, a service stopped, or a firewall rule changed. If you can't SSH in, use the Recovery Console from the DigitalOcean control panel, which works even when the Droplet has lost network access or SSH has failed.
What's the problem
Your site on DigitalOcean won't load, SSH times out, or the control panel shows the Droplet as off or unresponsive.
Why it happens
- A DigitalOcean incident in your region.
- Out of memory: the system killed your app or database. See out of memory.
- Disk full. See disk full.
- A stopped service: the web server or app didn't restart after a reboot.
- A firewall change (DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall or the server's own) blocking ports 80, 443 or 22.
- The Droplet is powered off, or the account has a billing hold.
How to fix it
- Check DigitalOcean's status page.
- Check the Droplet's graphs in the control panel for CPU, memory and disk around the time it failed.
- Get in: SSH if possible; otherwise use the Recovery Console.
- Check services (web server, app, database) are running, and free memory and disk space.
- Check firewall rules still allow web traffic.
- Power cycle the Droplet from the control panel as a last resort.
What Preventionlabs checks
One click runs the full report on your domain. For this problem it shows whether your site loads, how fast, and where its redirects go; uptime checked every 5 minutes, with an email when the site goes down and when it is back; up to 50 pages from your sitemap, listing any that fail or are slow, plus broken links on them; your DNS: nameservers, addresses, DNSSEC, and records pointing at services that no longer exist; your domain's registration and expiry date. It has no connection to your host, so check the host's status page and logs as well.
Run your free reportYour first report is free, no card needed. Then A$50 a month, up to 10 domains. Read-only: it never changes anything.
