Do my pages have duplicate titles or missing descriptions?
Updated 2026-10-17
Short answer: each page's title and description are what shows in search results. Pages with no title, the same title as another page, or no description look like duplicates to search engines and get weaker results.
How to check it yourself
- List your pages from your sitemap.
- For each, check the
<title>and the<meta name="description">in the source. - Make every title unique and specific to its page.
- Write a one-sentence description for each important page.
Why it matters
The page title is usually the headline search engines show for your page, and the description is often the text underneath. When many pages share the same title, search engines struggle to tell them apart, and people searching can't tell which result is the one they want.
Common causes
- The theme uses the site name as the title on every page.
- Pages were duplicated from a template and their titles never changed.
- An SEO plugin was removed, so custom titles and descriptions disappeared.
- Paginated or filtered pages reuse the main page's title.
