The Ray ID at the bottom of a Cloudflare page is not the problem. It's a tracking number for that one request, like a receipt number. The actual problem is the error number or message above it (for example 522, 1020 or "Sorry, you have been blocked"). Keep the Ray ID: it lets you, your host or Cloudflare find exactly that request in the logs.
What's the problem
A Cloudflare page shows an error and a line like "Cloudflare Ray ID: 8a1b2c3d4e5f6789". People often search the Ray ID thinking it's the error itself.
Why it happens
Every request through Cloudflare gets a Ray ID. It's printed on error and block pages so the request can be traced. The real cause is one of:
- A 5xx error: your server failed to answer properly. See Cloudflare error.
- A block page ("Sorry, you have been blocked", error 1020): a firewall or security rule blocked the visitor.
- A challenge loop: the visitor keeps getting a "checking your browser" page.
How to fix it
- Read the error number or message on the page, not the Ray ID.
- If it's a block, the site owner should search the Ray ID in Cloudflare's security events to find which rule blocked the visitor, then adjust that rule.
- If it's a 5xx error, follow the guide for that number.
- If you're a visitor being blocked, send the site owner the Ray ID and the time. That's what they need to find it.
What Preventionlabs checks
One click runs the full report on your domain. For this problem it shows whether your site loads, how fast, and where its redirects go; uptime checked every 5 minutes, with an email when the site goes down and when it is back. With Cloudflare connected, it also shows which pages returned server errors (5xx) to visitors, and when; your SSL mode and the other settings that commonly cause this; which requests the firewall blocked, by Cloudflare's own rule names; recent deploys and account changes, with their times; DNS changes in the last 7 days.
Run your free reportYour first report is free, no card needed. Then A$50 a month, up to 10 domains. Read-only: it never changes anything.
