A slow website is slow in one of two places. Either the server takes a long time to produce the page (you stare at a blank screen), or the page arrives quickly but is heavy (big images, lots of scripts) and takes a long time to finish loading. Measure which. Google's guidance is that the main content should appear within 2.5 seconds, and the server should start responding within 0.8 seconds.
What's the problem
Pages take several seconds to appear, visitors leave, or the site feels sluggish, especially on mobile or at busy times.
Why it happens
Slow server (long blank screen before anything appears):
- No caching, so every page is built from scratch on every visit.
- Slow database queries, or too many of them.
- An overloaded or undersized server, or cheap shared hosting.
- Waiting on outside services while building the page.
Heavy page (content appears slowly or in pieces):
- Large, uncompressed images.
- Lots of JavaScript, especially third-party scripts (chat widgets, trackers, ads).
- Many web fonts, or fonts that block the page from showing.
- No CDN, so files travel far to reach visitors.
How to fix it
- Measure. Run your page through PageSpeed Insights, or open browser Developer Tools → Network and reload. Note the time to first byte and the total load time.
- If the first byte is slow, work on the server: page caching, faster queries, a better hosting plan. See slow time to first byte.
- If the page is heavy, compress and resize images, use modern image formats, and lazy-load images below the fold.
- Cut scripts: remove third-party scripts you don't need and defer the rest.
- Use a CDN so images and files come from near the visitor.
- Measure again after each change.
What Preventionlabs checks
One click runs the full report on your domain. For this problem it shows page weight, oversized images and caching; how long each of up to 50 pages takes to download; whether your site loads, how fast, and where its redirects go. With Cloudflare connected, it also shows your visitor trend over 4 weeks; recent deploys and account changes, with their times. It measures from our checker, not from your visitors' phones, so test on a phone too.
