Website timeout

Updated 11 October 2026

Short answer

A timeout means something waited for an answer and gave up. Which "something" matters. A 504 means a proxy in front of your app (Nginx, a load balancer) gave up on your app. A Cloudflare 524 means Cloudflare waited 125 seconds for your server. A 522 or "connection timed out" means your server didn't even accept the connection. "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT" in the browser usually means the server is unreachable. Each points to a different place to look.

What's the problem

Pages load for a long time and then fail with a timeout error, or a specific action (search, checkout, an export) always times out.

Why it happens

  • A slow page: a heavy database query, a big export, or waiting on an outside API.
  • An overloaded server that can't keep up, so requests queue until they time out.
  • An unreachable server: stopped, out of resources, or blocked by a firewall.
  • Timeouts set short on a proxy compared with how long some pages legitimately take.

How to fix it

  1. Read the exact error (504, 524, 522, connection timed out) and follow its guide: 504, 524, 522.
  2. Find whether it's one page or all. One page means a slow step in that page. Everything means the server.
  3. For one slow page, find the slow query or call in your logs and fix it, or move the work to a background job.
  4. For everything, check the server's resources. See server overloaded.
  5. Only raise timeouts once you know the page genuinely needs longer.

What Preventionlabs checks

One click runs the full report on your domain. For this problem it shows page weight, oversized images and caching; how long each of up to 50 pages takes to download; whether your site loads, how fast, and where its redirects go. With Cloudflare connected, it also shows your visitor trend over 4 weeks; recent deploys and account changes, with their times. It measures from our checker, not from your visitors' phones, so test on a phone too.

Run your free report

Your first report is free, no card needed. Then A$50 a month, up to 10 domains. Read-only: it never changes anything.
