Shopify Payments not working

Updated 11 October 2026

Short answer

Open the Payments settings in your Shopify admin and look for an alert. Most Shopify Payments problems are account problems: verification documents requested and not provided, details that don't match, or a business type or country Shopify Payments doesn't support. Also check test mode is off, or customers' real cards won't be charged as you expect.

What's the problem

Customers can't pay by card, Shopify Payments is missing at checkout, payouts are on hold, or payments fail after checkout.

Why it happens

  • Verification needed: Shopify asked for identification, proof of address or business documents.
  • Details don't match, such as the business name or bank account.
  • Your country or business type isn't supported for Shopify Payments.
  • Test mode is still on after testing.
  • Card declines from the customer's bank, which aren't a store problem.
  • Fraud or risk checks holding particular orders.

How to fix it

  1. Open the payments settings in your Shopify admin and act on any alert or request.
  2. Provide any requested documents and make sure your details match your bank and business records.
  3. Check your country and business type are supported.
  4. Turn off test mode once you've finished testing.
  5. Place a test order to confirm payments work end to end.
  6. Contact Shopify Support if payments are on hold with no explanation.

What Preventionlabs checks

For this problem it shows your store: whether the password page is on, products are in stock and the cart works; whether your site loads, how fast, and where its redirects go; up to 50 pages from your sitemap, listing any that fail or are slow, plus broken links on them; script libraries on your homepage with published security holes; every outside service your homepage loads scripts and files from. It doesn't place orders or see your Shopify admin, so check Settings and your apps there too.
