Shopify theme error

Updated 11 October 2026

Short answer

Most Shopify theme errors follow a change: a code edit, a theme update, or a new app. Note that Shopify says code changes that don't fit a theme update are removed in the updated copy, so a working customisation can vanish after updating. The quickest fix is to publish the last working copy of your theme, then redo the change on a duplicate and test it before publishing.

What's the problem

Your storefront looks broken, a section is missing, the theme editor shows an error, or a "Liquid error" message appears on the page.

Why it happens

  • A code edit introduced a Liquid, HTML or JavaScript error.
  • A theme update removed your custom code.
  • An app added code to the theme that fails, or left code behind after being uninstalled.
  • A missing section or file that a template still refers to.

How to fix it

  1. Note the exact error text, including any file name it mentions.
  2. Publish a working copy of your theme if you kept one, to get the store back.
  3. Fix the change on a duplicate, not the live theme, and preview it before publishing.
  4. After a theme update, compare the new version with your old one and re-add custom code that was removed.
  5. If an app caused it, contact the app's support or remove the app, then check for leftover code it added.
  6. Get help from a Shopify developer if you're not comfortable with Liquid.

What Preventionlabs checks

One click runs the full report on your domain. For this problem it shows your store: whether the password page is on, products are in stock and the cart works; script libraries on your homepage with published security holes; every outside service your homepage loads scripts and files from; up to 50 pages from your sitemap, listing any that fail or are slow, plus broken links on them. It doesn't place orders or see your Shopify admin, so check Settings and your apps there too.

Run your free report

Your first report is free, no card needed. Then A$50 a month, up to 10 domains. Read-only: it never changes anything.
