Is my Shopify cart working?

Updated 2026-10-17

Short answer: if a Shopify store's cart stops answering, often after a theme change or an app that hooks into the cart, customers can browse but can't buy. The store looks fine, and sales just stop.

How to check it yourself

  1. Open your store in a private window, logged out.
  2. Add a product to the cart and go to checkout.
  3. Visit /cart.js on your store: it should return cart data in JSON, not an error or a blank page.
  4. If it fails, undo the last theme or app change and test again.

Why it matters

The cart is the step between interest and a sale. If it stops answering, customers can browse every product and still not be able to buy, and the store looks normal to anyone who doesn't try to add something. Sales just stop, and the cause isn't obvious from the dashboard.

Common causes

  • A theme update changed the cart code or the add-to-cart button.
  • A cart, upsell or discount app conflicts with the theme.
  • Custom code calling /cart.js or the cart API broke after an edit.
  • A script error elsewhere on the page stops the cart script running.

What Preventionlabs shows
