My Shopify store looks fine but nobody can buy. What's wrong?

Updated 2026-10-17

Short answer: first rule out the technical causes, because they're quick to check and stop every sale at once: the cart not answering after a theme or app change, every product showing sold out after an inventory problem, or the store password page still switched on. If those all pass, the problem is traffic or the offer, not the store.

How to check it yourself

  1. Open your store in a private window, logged out, so you see what customers see.
  2. Check you don't get a password page.
  3. Browse a few products and check they're available, not sold out.
  4. Add one to the cart and go to checkout. Also visit /cart.js on your store: it should return cart data, not an error.

What Preventionlabs shows

For Shopify stores, every report checks whether the store password page is still on, whether products are in stock, and whether the cart (/cart.js) answers.

It doesn't place orders or take payments, so finish one test checkout yourself after any big change.
